Most times you find mold on your furniture is after it has been in storage. Storage units can be damp and with poor ventilation making it molds best place to live! The last place you want to put this piece of furniture is in your house. On top of the mold being unsightly it can be a health risk to you and your family. However, just because you found mold does not mean your couch is now a piece of garbage, there are easy home solutions to cleaning the furniture.
You will need, a vacuum, a brush, paint mask, gloves and rubbing alcohol. First, take your couch out into the sun, if you cannot get access to the sun, put it in a well ventilated room and put newspaper underneath the couch to catch the mold that you will be removing. Put on the gloves and paint mask before getting started to avoid inhaling the fumes or touching your eyes after working.
Vacuum your couch first and throw out the vacuum bag containing the mold spores. Next, in a large bowl, mix 1 cup warm water and 1 cup rubbing alcohol, use a sponge or cloth to apply the mixture to the affected areas until the mold no longer is falling off.
Rinse the couch with a clean, damp sponge and let it air dry, preferable in the sun, as it is a natural mold inhibitor. If you cannot take the couch out in the sun, set a fan or electrical heater by the couch to dry it out.
Be sure that you do this process thoroughly and do not bring mold into your home. If you are still concerned about mold damage in your home, here at Peniel Environmental we hold mold inspections for all NH homes in Wilton, Keene, Concord and more surrounding NH cities and towns.
