Steps to take to keep your pipes from freezing:

Check the insulation of pipes. Get a good look at crawl spaces, attics and underneath sinks. For pipes that are exposed, pay extra close attention as these ones are more susceptible to freezing.

Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes.

Become aware of where cold air can get into your home. Some of the common places to find air leaks are around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes. Use proper insulation to keep the cold out. With the severe cold temperatures that New Hampshire can experience, even a tiny opening can let in just enough cold air to cause a pipe to freeze.

Keeping the water moving makes it harder for the water to freeze. We recommend leaving hot and cold water lightly trickle overnight to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.

Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night. Don’t turn your heat down while you are sleeping as temperatures usually drop during the night.

Open cabinet doors to your kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes near exterior walls.
